Small round plain white fan
¥3,200(excl. tax)
This small, round fan is handcrafted using beautifully textured plain white washi paper. The clean white edges showcase the beauty of the material and its shape.
Originally used as a tool to ward off evil spirits, fans have been popular as gifts to ward off the summer heat since the Edo period. This fan also makes a great seasonal greeting or a gift to bring coolness. A bottle of incense is hidden in the box it arrives in, sending a faintly scented breeze through the air.

HISTORY
Sfera fans are made by Aiba, a long-established Kyoto fan maker with a 300-year history.
Kyoto fans are highly decorative, exquisitely crafted, and intricately designed, making them known as "Miyako Uchiwa" (City Fans). They are elegant traditional crafts that were once used at the Imperial Court.
Since its founding, Aiba's artisans have meticulously handcrafted each and every fan, resulting in unparalleled quality backed by history and tradition. While preserving traditional techniques, the company continues to explore new avenues in fan making, incorporating ingenuity in recent years, such as the development of the "openwork" fan technique, which is a hallmark of modern Aiba.
About the Techniques
A key feature of Kyoto uchiwa is the "inserted handle" structure, in which the fan surface and handle are made separately, and the ribs are arranged radially and the handle is attached later. Kyoto uchiwa are made through 16 processes. From the initial design, the ribs that form the framework are processed, the paper is processed using paper cutouts and woodblocks for the cover, the backing is applied to create the framework, and finally, the finishing touches are applied to assemble everything together, resulting in the final product. Everything is done by hand by skilled artisans, and many of these techniques are unique to Aiba.
The finest materials are used, and the bamboo used for the framework is madake bamboo, grown in the flatlands of cold regions such as Saga, which takes four to five years to grow.
