Shoji ware mug
Shodai ware has a 400-year history in the foothills of Mt. Shodai in northern Kumamoto Prefecture.
Not only the clay, but also the firewood and straw used in the glaze are sourced locally. Fired in high-temperature climbing kilns, the pottery is filled with a rustic, generous charm that reflects the local character. The tasteful colors of the top glaze, known as Ao-Shodai, Ki-Shodai, and Shiro-Shodai, are also distinctive features. Different color-developing techniques are used, using straw ash, wood ash, and feldspar, varying the glaze composition and firing temperature.
This mug is available in two colors: dark brown and creamy white. Its slightly larger size makes it a great soup cup.
