Shodai-yaki mug
Shodai-yaki ware, with a history of 400 years at the base of Mt. Shodai in northern Kumamoto Prefecture.
Adhering to using local firewood and straw for the glaze as well as the earth, these ceramics fired in high temperature climbing kilns are full of simple and relaxed charms reflecting the land’s disposition. The profound colouring of the glazes called ao-shodai (blue shodai), ki-shodai (yellow shodai), and shiro-shodai (white shodai) is one of the unique characteristics. Using straw ash, wood ash, and feldspar, different colouring techniques are used depending on the compound of the glaze and the burning temperature.
